“In a movie it’s funny when a life falls apart, because the people say clever things while it’s happening, but in reality it’s only dismal and repugnant.” I really liked this one! The format was probably my favorite thing about it. The whole book is told through journal entries written by the main character. It made the story feel surprisingly personal. The writing itself was also really clever. There’s something about only knowing what he chooses to write down, and seeing everything through his perspective, that worked so well here. I kept questioning what was actually happening and trying to piece things together from his entries. It’s a short novella, so it moves really quickly. I don’t think there’s any filler in this book and it’s definitely twisty, weird, mysterious, and very easy to get through from the very first page. I think I’ll be watching the movie today. I’m really curious about how this was translated into film, with this being told entirely through journal entries, so much of what makes it interesting comes from being inside the main character’s perspective, so I really want to see how the adaptation handles that. Not quite a 5⭐️ but it’s a book I would definitely recommend.

I loved the vibes but the short chapters + multiple POVs made the experience a bit disorienting and it was hard to connect with all the characters because I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with them. Also, the chapters from little girls perspective, Lorrie, were making the story a bit unrealistic (I know this is fiction and it’s not supposed to be super realistic) because sometimes she would have thoughts that are normal for a kid but then she would think like a full on adult. AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE GUN SCENE, do you really expect me to believe a 10 year old is going to shoot someone straight in the eye???? And then you expect me to believe that she went into the blizzard without appropriate clothing and didn’t complain about the cold at all??? When all throughout the book we had Nathan describing how rough the weather was out there.
